Hands Like Air

Velehel'e had never been asked out before, but knew this wasn't the right way to do it-- if that's what this was. She looked up at the strange girl, her face trying to retain a polite smile as confusion threatened to overtake it.

"I'm sorry...did I hear that right?"

The girl stepped forward, and sighed, as if Velehel'e was the one acting strange. "I said, you're going on a walk with me."

Velehel'e blinked, and adjusted her glasses-- though they would offer little encouragement in return. "Oh...well, I don't really know you, maybe if-"

"We're going, now." The stranger thrust a hand out towards her, palm up, inviting her to take it.

She wasn't sure why she took the girl's hand. She hesitated, sure, but she had had higher expectations of herself. Why would she simply accept the command of a stranger? Stranger, still, was the sensation. The girl's hand felt light, soft, almost like...

Almost like air. The space without her, as she disappeared-- suddenly and miraculously. Velehel'e cradled the empty space for a moment, in stunned, perplexed silence, before the wind sighed for her-- and she let her hand fall back to her lap, limp and heavy. Had she imagined it? Imagine being so lonely that you start having conversations with figments of your imagination. Couldn’t be me.    So anyways, Ocea, what were you saying about me needing to see a doctor?

Life is too short to be squandering on things you don’t enjoy or things that do nothing to benefit those around you.

Of course, who would do such a thing?

Wow, this chapter is hauntingly beautiful the way you capture Velehel’e’s hesitation and wonder is mesmerizing! I love how the writing makes the reader feel the weight of her uncertainty and the almost ethereal presence of the stranger. The subtle tension and delicate emotions are so vivid, I could feel every pause and heartbeat. I’m left completely captivated by the mysterious pull between them. What will happen on this walk, and will the stranger reveal more of herself or was this fleeting encounter only the beginning?
